Enjoyed reading your post. I tend to agree with you about the presence of US forces being overstated, and probably simply delaying an eventual reckoning. However, in my view, there are other roles to play, and although we may have lost some leverage, the US remains in a good position to help prevent Iraq's reckoning from becoming an all-out civil war. Given recent developments in the region, a renewed civil war would not only claim many lives, it would likely develop into a protracted proxy war like the one underway in Syria today, or even worse, a regional war like the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. Ultimately, however, without local and national leaders committed to peace, the US and international community can only do so much. At the very least, we have to keep pressing Maliki and the major parties to restore some power sharing arrangement ahead of 2014 elections, and seek to create incentives for advancing negotiations on core issues. It may also help as popular pressure grows for better governance, from the delivery of basic services to the creation & improvement of education & job opportunities.
